SURFACE RESERVOIRS, PONDS AND LAGOONS

Surface reservoirs, waste water treatment works, reed beds and lagoons

Flexible geomembrane lining systems constitute what is now fast becoming the first choice for clients wishing to provide a fast, cost–effective means of storing their liquids in earth dams, lagoons and ponds in the long term.

These liner systems are often preferred by clients because they can be installed and supported by effected CQA procedures to verify their integrity and their use is supported in many areas by environmental bodies because of their long term durability and integrity which are crucial in the protection of the environment.

Waste water treatment lagoons

Well designed and installed flexible liner systems are often preferred by clients because they can be installed and supported by effected CQA procedures to verify their integrity and their use is supported in many areas by the environmental bodies because of their long term durability and integrity which are crucial in the protection of the environment.

In sewage and waste water treatment facilities it is imperative that any selected liner system is proven to be resistant not only to the effects of climate in the long term but also resistant to the potential attack of chemicals, highly organic fatty acids and oils in the long term.

The design and installation of liner systems for these application areas warrant a very detailed approach to the mechanical and physical forces to which they would be subjected during both operation and maintenance cycles.

Reed beds

This natural means of effluent purification combines complex reactions between vegetation, microbes and substrates.

These reed beds, artificial wetlands or grasslands are actually mini bio-reactors which are extremely eco–friendly and which birds, wild fowl, insects and other flora and fauna species are attracted, resulting in a natural re-stocking of breeding zones.

The purification system is often very basic in nature comprising inlet, outlet and overflow pipes or channels feeding a single or a series of cells or lagoons which are constructed with a liner system, protection geotextile, gravel or basal drainage layer and then a cover of suitable soil into which specific plant and reed types are planted to improve the improve the volume and distribution of oxygen required for the natural process of effluent purification to take place.

Flexible, robust and durable liner systems are often preferred by clients because they can be installed and supported by effected CQA procedures to verify their integrity and their use is supported in many areas by environmental bodies because of their long term durability and integrity which are crucial in the protection of the environment.

Aquaculture

Flexible geomembrane linings which are non toxic, chemically inert and durable are imperative for the stocking and breeding on any commercial scale of aquaculture and mariculture species.

Smooth membranes are the preferred choice due to the fact that they do not allow the attachment of micro-organisms, they do not damage fins and tails, are easily cleaned and maintained and improve overall pump efficiencies.

Aquaculture and other associated water based farming and harvesting methods have proved their worth in providing owners with good commercial returns on investment as they are uncomplicated, cost-effective and provide fish stock with all the essential nutrients they require to grow in a confined area under controlled conditions.

The high level of hygiene which is afforded by the liner system is not restricted to the ponds and lagoons only. There are other environmental benefits achieved by using liners in that the faecal fallout and debris does not enter the natural ground water surrounding these facilities.
